Why do hippos have big jaws?

Their big jaws help them:

- Feed efficiently: They have a wide gape that allows them to ingest a lot of food quickly, which is crucial in their semi-aquatic habitat where food may be scarce.

- Defend themselves and establish dominance: Hippos are highly territorial animals and use their powerful jaws to defend their territory and mates from potential threats.

- Thwart predators: Their large, intimidating jaws can deter predators, including crocodiles and lions, which might otherwise pose a threat to them.

- Graze low vegetation: They primarily feed on grasses that grow near the water's edge, and their large jaws help them reach these plants more effectively.

- Cool down: Hippopotamuses have a unique ability to regulate their body temperature through their skin, which is sparse in hair. By opening their jaws and exposing the moist surfaces inside, they can cool down in the hot African environment.
