How are opposums protected?
Oppossums do not have any specific protected status due to their abundance and widespread distribution. In fact, they are considered to be a common pest in many areas. However, like all wildlife in the United States, they are indirectly protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. This federal law protects migratory birds, but in some cases has also been interpreted to include other wildlife species, including possums, based on the argument that they may consume or otherwise interfere with migratory birds' nests or eggs. Additionally, some states have specific laws that protect wildlife, including possums, from being hunted or trapped without a license or during certain times of the year. These laws vary from state to state and are important to be aware of if you live in an area where possums are present.
