What are the small bones of spinal column called?
The small bones of the spinal column are called vertebrae. There are 33 vertebrae in the human spine, which is divided into five regions: the cervical spine (neck), thoracic spine (upper back), lumbar spine (lower back), sacrum, and coccyx (tailbone). Each vertebra is a small, irregularly shaped bone that forms a part of the spinal column. The vertebrae are stacked one on top of the other, with a cushion of cartilage (intervertebral discs) between each vertebra. The spinal column provides support for the body, protects the spinal cord, and allows for movement.
