What is Ornithophobia?
Ornithophobia is a specific phobia, an anxiety disorder, characterized by an intense and irrational fear of birds. In some cases, it encompasses a fear of all birds, called pan-ornithophobia, whereas more often, it pertains only to a specific species of bird, more specifically large birds like swans or vultures, or predatory birds like eagles and hawks. Individuals with ornithophobia experience significant anxiety and distress in anticipation of or upon seeing or hearing birds, which may lead to avoidance of places where they are present such as parks, zoos or rural areas. Common emotional symptoms include extreme anxiety, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, sweating and trembling. Physical symptoms may also manifest, like chest pain, shortness of breath and nausea, among others. This specific phobia can significantly interfere with daily life, leisure activities and travel.
