How did possum get its name?

The name "possum" is derived from the Algonquian word "aposoum", which means "white animal". The name was first used by English colonists in North America to refer to the Virginia opossum, which is the only marsupial native to North America. The name was later applied to other marsupials found in Australia, such as the common brushtail possum and the sugar glider.
