What do opossums smell like and is it possible they have a citrus smell?

Opossums are known for having a strong, musky odor that is often described as unpleasant. This smell is produced by a chemical compound called 2,4,6-trimethylpyridine, which is secreted by the opossum's anal glands. The smell is used as a defense mechanism to deter predators and is also thought to play a role in communication between opossums.

While it is possible for opossums to have a citrus smell, this is not a common occurrence. In some cases, opossums that have been exposed to citrus fruits or other strong-smelling substances may temporarily take on the scent of those substances. However, the citrus smell is not a natural odor for opossums and will usually dissipate after a short period of time.
