What are the descendents of a saber-toothed tiger?

The saber-toothed tiger, or Smilodon, is extinct. This means that it has no living descendants.

While Smilodon is often called a tiger, it's not actually closely related to modern tigers. It belonged to a different family of cats called Machairodontinae, which are now extinct.

The closest living relatives of Smilodon are the modern cats, which include lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, and cheetahs. They all share a common ancestor that lived millions of years ago.
