How large were the saber-tooth tigers?

The term "saber-tooth tiger" is a bit misleading, as it refers to a variety of extinct cat species, not just one.

However, here's some information about the size of some well-known saber-toothed cats:

* Smilodon fatalis: This is the most well-known saber-toothed cat. It was about the size of a modern lion (around 8 to 10 feet long and weighing 500 to 1000 pounds). They were powerfully built, with very large canine teeth (up to 12 inches long) and short, powerful legs.

* Homotherium: This saber-tooth cat was slightly smaller than *Smilodon fatalis*, around 6 to 7 feet long. It had longer legs and a more slender build than *Smilodon*, suggesting it may have been faster.

* Megantereon: Another saber-tooth cat, *Megantereon*, was about the size of a leopard. It was more agile than *Smilodon* and may have been able to climb trees.

Important Note: While there were a lot of different saber-tooth cat species, they are not all closely related. Some, like Smilodon and Homotherium, share a more recent common ancestor, while others are only distantly related.
