As of 2021, the estimated population of black rhinos in the wild is approximately 5,630 individuals.
. This includes the following subspecies:
. Eastern black rhinoceros (~750-900): Found in Tanzania, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and some neighboring countries.
. South-central black rhinoceros (~4,880-5,115): Mainly in South Africa, some in northern Namibia, Zimbabwe, and neighboring countries
. South-western black rhinoceros (~20): Critically endangered and confined to Etosha National Park in Namibia.
