The mantis shrimp possesses one of the most powerful punches in the animal kingdom. Its specialized forelimbs, known as raptorial claws, are capable of delivering extremely rapid, powerful strikes with incredible acceleration. These claws can generate forces up to 1,500 times the mantis shrimp's own body weight, propelling the claws at speeds of up to 23 meters per second (52 mph). The mantis shrimp uses these powerful strikes to stun or kill its prey, which includes small fish, mollusks, and other invertebrates.
