Cheetahs usually hunt during the day, seeking their preferred prey of medium-sized antelopes like impala,Thomson’s gazelles and wildebeest calves. Their hunting grounds are primarily open grasslands and savannahs, providing ample space for their high-speed chases.
Despite being sprinters, cheetahs are not endurance hunters and rely on stealth to get close to their prey before launching a final sprint. They start by cautiously stalking their target, blending in with the surrounding landscape. Once within a suitable range, typically 100 to 300 meters, the cheetah makes its move.
Speed Burst and Trip
With exceptional acceleration, the cheetah surges forward in pursuit of the antelope, reaching speeds of up to 112 km/h (69.6 mph) within just 3 seconds. This incredible speed allows them to cover great distances in a matter of seconds, outpacing even the swiftest antelopes.
As the cheetah closes in, it extends its claws, which act like spikes on running shoes, providing traction and preventing slipping. The chase is a visual spectacle, but it rarely lasts more than a few hundred meters. The cheetah aims to trip the antelope with its powerful front paws, often targeting the animal's legs. The sudden loss of balance causes the antelope to stumble or fall, presenting the cheetah with an opportunity to grab its prize.
Securing the Kill
Once the antelope is on the ground, the cheetah swiftly moves in to deliver the final blow. It sinks its canine teeth into the victim’s throat, piercing the windpipe and causing suffocation. The entire attack sequence happens within seconds, and once the prey is secured, the cheetah drags it to a suitable shady spot to rest and consume its meal.
The Importance of Open Areas
The cheetah's hunting strategy heavily relies on open spaces that allow for both efficient stalking and sprinting. Forests and dense vegetation obstruct their ability to reach maximum speed, making them less successful hunters in such habitats. As a result, cheetahs are predominantly found in grasslands and semi-arid environments, where they can freely unleash their astounding speed.
