Why were the chipettes created?

Alvin's creator Ross Bagdasarian envisioned a female version of the group and thus created The Chipettes. Brittany, Eleanor and Jeannette had their debut in 1983 when they were introduced in a TV series on NBC called "Alvin and The Chipmunks".
