How many different species of wolves are there?

There is only one species of wolf: Canis lupus.

However, Canis lupus has several subspecies, including:

* Gray wolf (Canis lupus lupus): The most common subspecies, found throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.

* Red wolf (Canis lupus rufus): A critically endangered subspecies found only in the southeastern United States.

* Eastern wolf (Canis lupus lycaon): A subspecies found in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada.

* Himalayan wolf (Canis lupus chanco): Found in the Himalayas.

* Indian wolf (Canis lupus pallipes): Found in the Indian subcontinent.

* Arabian wolf (Canis lupus arabs): Found in the Arabian Peninsula.

* Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis): Although closely related to wolves, it is considered a separate species.

So while there is only one species of wolf, there are several subspecies with distinct characteristics and geographic ranges.
