Common Places for Wolves & Coyotes

Coyotes and wolves are similar species with common habitats, hence coyotes are referred to as "prairie wolves" on the North American Midwest. Both coyotes and wolves can be found all over North America and mountainous areas in Europe. Common places to find coyotes would be open fields in the woods as they hunt small rodents in this habitat. Wolves tend to stay deeper in wooded areas, but can be found in Arctic tundra, plains and forests, too. The wolf is the coyote's main enemy, so finding both together could be dangerous.
  1. Prairie

    • Coyotes hunt in the prairie, where small prey thrives.

Find prairies with tall grass and bushes, as this environment aids the coyote in keeping a low profile while hunting rodents. Prairies help coyotes work as a team while hunting due to the open layout of the land, without large trees inhibiting communication.

    Heavily Wooded Areas

    • Wolves prefer the cover of the deep woods.

Locate a woof in heavily wooded areas, as this is its preference. Coyotes also can be found here. While coyotes are more likely to stray closes to human populations -- for example, having habitats closer to roads -- the wolf prefers to stay in the woods where more prey lives.

    Tundra

    • Tundra is found in the Arctic circle.

Find wolves primarily in tundra, which is defined as ground that is frozen 4 to 5 inches below snow, making grass and vegetation growth nearly impossible. As human populations have become larger, wolves have gravitated to the northern Canadian and Alaskan tundra, where they live off large caribou, rodents and any meat they can get a bite of. In some areas in northern Canada, there is an estimated one wolf every 25 square miles, which is a higher density that anywhere else.

    Farms in Rural Areas

    • Locate rural farms where livestock is plentiful, mainly chickens and smaller prey. Many farmers have disdain for coyotes and wolves as they infringe on their livestock. Wolves and coyotes gravitate to these farms for an easy meal.
