Why do wolves pick an alpha?

The idea of alpha wolves is mostly outdated. It comes from early observations of captive wolves that established dominance hierarchies to maintain order in confined spaces. In natural wolf society, there are usually breeding pairs that lead the pack, based on strong family bonds rather than dominance.
