Check the coat of the pot bellied pig. If the hairs are all standing on end then the animal may be sick. This can also happen to the pot bellied pig's coat when they are cold in spotty formations on the coat.
Take note if the pot bellied pig is not eating well or with the usual gusto. If there is one thing these animals love to do, it is eat. Therefore, if they eat but they are just not into it, chances are you have an ill animal on your hands.
Pay attention to the position of the pot bellied pigs hind legs. If the hind legs are close to its front legs causing the animals back to hunch or bow up, then this is a sign that the animal is sick.
Verify that the pot bellied pig's skin does not a have excessive flaking or spotty coloring. Pot bellied pigs are especially susceptible to mange, sunburn and seborrhea.
Notice if the pot bellied pig is laboring to breathe. Pneumonia and atrophic rhinitis are two respiratory diseases that are not unusual in the pot bellied pig.

While some may find it odd, a pot bellied pig can make a great pet. These animals are smarter than dogs and they are cute in a pot bellied pig sort of way. However because they are obviously not a usual pet they have special needs. An owner must learn the specific signs to look for to tell if a pot bellied pig is ill.
