Koalas do not raise their young alone. After a gestation period of about 30-35 days, a koala gives birth to a single offspring known as a joey. The joey is born blind, hairless, and only about 2 centimeters (0.8 inches) in length. It immediately crawls into the mother's pouch, where it remains attached to her teat and continues to develop for another six to seven months. During this time, the joey is completely dependent on its mother for nutrition and protection.
After emerging from the pouch, the joey continues to stay close to its mother and rides on her back. The mother koala teaches her joey how to climb trees and find food. The joey will stay with its mother for up to two years, learning the necessary skills to survive on its own.
