How to Artificially Inseminate Goats

Artificial insemination of your goats will provide you with the same healthy, normal kid goats as natural breeding. Artificial insemination is ideal under certain circumstances such as absence of a buck, infertility problems and cost of breeding. To artificially inseminate your doe, it is important to pinpoint her cycle so you can accurately determine when she is in heat and how long between each cycle. A doe that is not in heat will not successfully conceive.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure your doe is in heat by physically examining her vagina and temperature. You may also place your doe in a pen with a "teaser" treated with hormones to determine if she is in heat. Insemination should begin 12 hours after the onset of your doe's cycle.

    • 2

Thaw your frozen semen in 90- to 95-degree water. This should take about 40 to 45 seconds.

    • 3

Wear a pair of gloves and attach the unit of thawed semen to an insemination rod, available at your local farm and livestock supplier.

    • 4

Insert the rod into your doe's vagina. Guide the rod slowly into the doe's uterus so you do not cause the doe any pain or discomfort. The insertion level will depend on the rod that you are using. Check manufacturer instructions for this information.

    • 5

Administer the semen for eight to 10 seconds with the insemination rod in the doe's uterus. Stop the flow of semen from the unit and slowly remove the rod. Once the rod is clear of the vaginal cavity, clean the surrounding skin to prevent bacterial invasion.
