How to Breed Blue Wheaten Color Chickens

Chicken breeders and enthusiasts prize wheaten blue Ameraucanas for their orange and dusky blue feathers and light blue eggs. Wheaten blues are generally calm chickens who can easily adapt to a variety of environments. Blue is not a dominant color gene for chickens so you must carefully consider the gene combinations of the chickens you plan to breed. Breeding wheaten blues can be a challenging but rewarding experiment in genetics.

Select the optimum hen and rooster to obtain blue wheaten chickens. If you breed two blue wheatens together the clutch will approximately consist of half blue, one-quarter black and one-quarter splash colors. Breeding blue and black or splash chickens will yield half blue and half black or splash chicks. Poultry Keepers, a poultry enthusiast group, recommends breeding splash and black chickens together to achieve 100 percent blue chicks. The chicks will vary in shade and quality, but all will be blue.
