How to Strengthen Eggs

Until young hens begin to lay eggs, they don't have much need for calcium. That changes when the first egg is laid, when the need for calcium quadruples. Without supplemental calcium, egg production suffers and hens can begin laying eggs with thin or missing shells. In severe cases of calcium deficiency, the mineral is leached from the hen's bones, causing difficulty standing. Providing a balanced diet which includes layer feed and supplemental calcium can prevent these and other health problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase layer feed containing a minimum of 16 percent protein, 3 percent calcium and 0.5 percent phosphorus.

    • 2

Fill a hanging feeder with layer feed. Suspend the feeder inside the coop so the opening is level with the hens' backs to avoid wasting food.

    • 3

Fill a one-quart feeder with oyster shell and place inside the coop. The hens will eat the oyster shell as needed.
