Feed laying hens a nutritious diet. Poultry One, a website which provides articles on chicken husbandry, recommends that laying hens be feed a diet that consists of 15-percent protein, plenty of vitamins and a probiotic supplement.

Chose chickens that have desirable egg-laying traits. Opt for hens that lay the most eggs with minimal food and water. Overly large chickens and brooding hens should not be breed.

Place one or two roosters with the laying hens.

Observe the flock in the early morning and late afternoon. Chickens mate primarily during these times. If a rooster successfully mounts a hen, mating has occurred.
