How to Calculate a Pig Gestation Period

Breeding pigs is an important and sometimes difficult task. There are many preparations to be made before the piglets are born, including providing them with a safe pen and arranging for veterinary care. The best way to be prepared for the birth of piglets is to calculate the sow's gestational period, so that you have an idea of when the piglets will be born.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the first date that your pig was bred. It is important to calculate from the first date of breeding, as pregnancy often occurs in the first attempt.

    • 2

Count 115 days from the first day of breeding. The average gestational period for a pig is 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days, or 114 days. This will tell you the piglets' due date.

    • 3

Prepare for the birth of the piglets to occur at night on or near the day you calculated. Pigs are sensitive to light when giving birth, and thus often give birth at night. Provide a safe, quiet place for the sow to deliver her babies.
