How to Buy Northern Bobwhites

Northern bobwhites are found on the eastern side of the United States, through several states covering almost half the country. Northern bobwhites are bred in captivity or are wild in various regions.Though wild bobwhites are not easily purchased, bobwhites that breeders have raised are available for sale to consumers, hunters or other breeders.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a local northern bobwhites breeder. Breeders are usually found in the eastern states rather than western states, so some areas might not have any breeders available. Breeder lists are available through various bird breeding websites, such as Quail Breeders Directory.

    • 2

Call the breeder and ask if the northern bobwhites are available for sale. Some breeders might sell only chicks; others will sell adult birds. Some breeders might even sell birds at any age. If they are not selling at the time of the call, find out when. Some breeders only sell birds at specific ages or times, such as during the hunting season or when chicks are hatching. Breeders not selling at the time of the call will often sell later.

Set up a meeting with whichever breeder is ready to sell. A meeting via phone or in person is necessary to work out the details of the purchase. Keep in mind that meeting in person might result in bringing home the bobwhites more quickly; arranging over the phone requires setting up shipping.
