Things You'll Need
- Frozen bull semen
- Gloves
- Obstetrical sleeve
- Cloth
- Insemination rod or pistolette
Instructions
Get bull semen from a quality, champion male cow. Although it is possible to use fresh semen, it is more likely that you will have to obtain frozen semen that has been collected by professionals in a sterile atmosphere.
Place the cow in a comfortable position. Make sure to clean the cow vulva and the whole area with warm water and a soft cloth to prevent contaminating the reproductive tract with bacteria. Consult with a veterinarian to check if the cow is in her estrus period. Chances of conception are highest in the second half of the estrus period.
Sterilize all the materials you will need to prevent infecting the cow during the artificial-insemination process. Wear thick, long rubber gloves or an obstetrical sleeve.
Prepare the bull semen for the insemination process. Since it is frozen, thaw it according to the instructions on the package. Usually, you submerge the tank with stored semen into warm water to gradually thaw the specimen. Once you have completely thawed the semen and it is lukewarm, do not to let it cool off: Proceed with the artificial insemination immediately.
Fill the insemination rod with thawed bull semen, or attach one unit of semen to the rod, depending on the instruments you are using. If you are using a pistolette tool, simply cut off the end of a straw filled with semen and insert it into the tool. Some veterinarians store and freeze bull semen in a tank filled with individual straws, so adjust your insemination tool accordingly.
Insert the insemination rod filled with semen into the cow's vagina, all the way through the cervical canal and into the uterus. Start inserting the rod at a 30- to 40-degree angle and make sure not to touch the cow's outer vulva during the process.
Inject the bull semen with the insemination rod once you have reached the uterus. Deposit the material slowly and steadily until the whole unit is delivered inside the uterus. Remove the insemination rod once all the semen has been delivered.
