How to Breed Flemish Giants

Flemish giants are large rabbits that generally weight 13 lbs. or more when full grown. They are available in an array of colors, including black, blue, fawn, steel, sandy, gray, white and light gray. They are a powerful-looking rabbit and are very solid. They are calm rabbits and love affection. They are easy to groom and make wonderful pets. The females are called does and the males are called bucks. If you are a Flemish giant owner, you may want to consider breeding your pet. Like most rabbits, they are easy to breed and do so freely, but there are a few steps you will need to follow.

Instructions

    • 1

House your buck and doe in separate cages to prevent unwanted breeding.

    • 2

Transfer the doe to her mate's cage, never the other way around.

    • 3

Watch for signs that the doe is receptive to mating. Look for a raised bottom.

    • 4

Allow the buck to mount the doe. Remove the doe from the buck's cage when he has dismounted her.

    • 5

Attempt a second breeding of the same pair, repeating the above process, some time in the next 1 to 6 hours to ensure that breeding was successful. Return the doe to her cage.

    • 6

Use a calendar to remember dates. Indicate breeding date, day 29 for adding a nesting box, and day 31 for the due date.

    • 7

Add a nesting box, which can be purchased at your local pet store, on day 29. Do not add it too early, because the mother may use it as a toilet. Clean out the box as needed until the rabbits are born.

    • 8

Line the nesting box with 2 inches of woodchips or straw during cold seasons.
