Choose a method that will fit into your operation. There are several methods that can help to increase the chances of heifers, or female calves, over bulls/steers, or male calves. Using artificial insemination is more costly, but increases the chance of conceiving the sex of the calf in your favor. Changing the cow's diet, a less expensive but less foolproof method, can help to increase the number of heifer calves born to a herd with natural insemination.
Science has learned that the X or Y chromosome of the male sperm is what determines the sex of the calf. The X chromosome is in the female-carrying sperm. It is heavier, but has a longer life span than its male-carrying counterpart.
Using the first method, purchase straws of semen that has been sorted to the X and Y chromosomes. Genetic research companies have been able to separate the sperm carrying the correct chromosome and are able to market them.
Use artificial insemination (inserting the male semen in the cow) following prescribed methods. The odds of conceiving a heifer calf are greatly increased.
Using the second method, add acidic supplements to the mother cow's diet. If the acidic level of a cow's body is raised, the odds of conceiving a heifer calf rise. The Y chromosome of sperm has a higher mortality rate in a highly acidic atmosphere, therefore, the female X chromosome will have a better opportunity to survive and impregnate the cow.
Increase silage or add a bit of fruit and/or vinegar to the cow's diet to increase the acidic content of the cow's diet. Your chances of the cow producing a heifer calf are increased.
How to Get More Female Calves Than Male Calves in Your Herd
In the cattle industry, there are two main focal points of production: one is milk, the other is meat. Ranchers and beef producers are looking for male calves for their higher value and better cuts of meat, while the dairy industry is looking for females to either replace or increase their base herd for higher milk production. You can increase the possibility of more female calves with artificial insemination, which may be cost prohibitive, or you can try altering your cow's diet.
