How to Build a Chicken Waterer

An automatic waterer for chickens is a great convenience. An automatic waterer saves you time by keeping a ready supply of fresh water available for your chickens without repeated trips to the barn. Unfortunately, purchasing a chicken waterer can be expensive. You can easily make a chicken waterer at home that works the same way the manufactured varieties do for a fraction of the price.

Things You'll Need

  • One-gallon glass jug
  • 9-inch stainless steel pie plate
  • 4 wood blocks measuring 1 inch by 1 inch by ½ inch thick
  • Epoxy glue
  • Heavy book

Instructions

Put a line of epoxy glue in the center of each of the four wooden blocks. Attach the wood blocks to the mouth of the glass jug. Place the blocks equally around the mouth of the jug. The space these blocks will create will allow water to flow from your chicken waterer.

    • 2

Set a heavy book or other heavy object on top of the blocks. Set the jug aside until the glue dries. It will take approximately three hours for the epoxy to set.

    • 3

      Fill the jug with water.

Place the pie plate with the inside down over the jug. With one hand resting on the pie plate and the other under the jug flip the whole thing over. Place the waterer on a level surface. Water will flow out of the jug through the gap made by the wooden blocks. When the water level in the pie plate reaches the top of the blocks, it will stop flowing. Water will flow from the jug and automatically replace what your chickens drink.
