Nesting
-
Sows, much like humans, go through a nesting phase in which they will move straw and bedding material into a nest-like shape in one area of their pen.
Jitters
-
Your sow will become restless close to the time when she farrows. She may pace or move around in circles, as though looking for the perfect position.
Milk Production
-
Sows produce milk right when their delivery time nears. Gently squeeze her teats and look for droplets of milk to determine if she's ready.
Rapid Breathing
-
As with humans, sows go through a period of contractions. Their breathing becomes more intense and they will rapidly blow air out of their snouts as they strain to give birth to their young.
Birth Positions
-
If a sow lies on her back with her rear legs outstretched it can be a sign that delivery is near. However, this is not always the case, as some sows give birth while standing.

What Are the Signs of a Pregnant Sow?
Female pigs have a short 112- to 115-day gestation period, and because of their naturally large size, it can be difficult to tell if a sow is pregnant, especially if the litter she's carrying is small. There are, however, several signs to look for closer to her delivery, which is known as farrowing.
