Do axis deer cross breed with other deer?

Axis deer (Axis axis) are a distinct species of deer native to the Indian subcontinent. While they can interbreed with other species of deer in captivity, such as fallow deer (Dama dama), red deer (Cervus elaphus), or sika deer (Cervus nippon), these hybrids are rare and generally not fertile.

In the wild, axis deer typically mate with other axis deer, and successful breeding between axis deer and other deer species is uncommon. Therefore, while interbreeding with other deer species is possible under controlled conditions, it does not significantly affect the genetic integrity or population dynamics of axis deer in their natural environments.
