How to Learn About Buckeye Chickens

The Buckeye is a large, rare breed of chicken noted for its hardiness and beauty. Bred in Ohio in the late 19th century, the breed was initially called the Pea-Combed Rhode Island Red. The bird is a cross between Asian breeds, such as the Cochin, and American types including the Barred Rock. Unlike the other varieties of "reds," the Buckeye is a more compact bird, with a pea-comb and distinguishing South Asian features. This breed is an excellent range keeper and needs pasturing. They are extremely cold-hardy and an excellent choice for northern chicken keepers.
