How to Make a Nest Out of Milk Crates

Chickens are particular about where they lay eggs. The space must be private and in a safe place to protect the eggs from potential predators. Cardboard boxes are an inexpensive solution to this issue, but are not sturdy enough for long-term use. Another inexpensive solution is to create a chicken nesting box with plastic milk crates. The crate is large enough to accommodate the chicken and sturdy enough to last for several years.

Instructions

Turn the milk crate onto its side and set a piece of cardboard onto the bottom of the nesting box. The cardboard liner keeps the nesting material in place and is easily replaced to create a more sanitary environment.

Cover the cardboard with a 2-to-3-inch layer of wood shavings. Shredded newspaper and straw are also adequate nesting materials.

Set the nesting box into a quiet, confined area. Choose a spot that is away from drafts and at least 2 feet off the ground. This protects the eggs from predators and provides the mother chicken with a sense of security, which increases egg production. Set the milk crate nesting box onto a bench or attach it to the wall with screws.
