Step 1: Collect Tools and Parts
Before you begin, gather the following tools and parts:
- Socket wrench
- Socket extensions
- 5/8" socket
- 7/16" wrench
- 1/2" wrench
- Mower deck lift assist spring (if needed)
- Mower deck belt
- Mower deck hardware kit (bolts, washers, etc)
- Safety glasses
Step 2: Prepare the Mower
1. Turn off the engine and engage the parking brake.
2. Jack up the mower and support it on a level surface using a suitable support, such as a vehicle ramp.
3. Locate the mower deck lifting handle and disengage it. This will lower the mower deck.
4. Remove the belt cover. It is usually secured by a few bolts or screws.
5. Remove the belt from the drive pulley and the mower deck pulleys.
Step 3: Remove the Old Mower Deck
1. Detach the mower deck lift assist spring from the mower deck. This spring is usually attached to the deck and the mower frame with a few bolts or screws.
2. Remove the mower deck hardware that secures the mower deck to the mower frame.
3. Carefully lower the mower deck until it is completely removed from the mower.
Step 4: Inspect and Repair Components
1. Inspect the mower deck for any signs of damage, such as cracks or worn components.
2. Check the mower deck lift assist spring for any signs of wear or damage. If necessary, replace the spring.
3. Clean the mower deck using a brush or rag.
Step 5: Install the New Mower Deck
1. Position the new mower deck under the mower frame.
2. Install the mower deck hardware to attach the mower deck to the mower frame. Tighten the bolts securely.
3. Reinstall the mower deck lift assist spring. Make sure it is securely attached to the mower deck and the mower frame.
Step 6: Reinstall the Belt
1. Place the belt on the drive pulley first, and then stretch it around the mower deck pulleys.
2. Check that the belt is routed correctly, making sure it follows the correct path on the pulleys.
3. Adjust the belt tension. Refer to the owner's manual for specific instructions.
4. Reinstall the belt cover.
Step 7: Test the Mower Deck
1. Lower the mower deck using the lifting handle.
2. Start the mower and engage the blades.
3. Test the mower deck for proper operation. Ensure the mower deck raises, lowers, and cuts the grass smoothly.
Step 8: Clean Up
4. Dispose of any old parts or waste properly.
5. Clean the work area and put the tools away.
