How to Build a Peahen Roost

A peahen is the female counterpart of a pair of peafowl, with the male commonly referred to as the peacock. These birds are typically raised as ornamental pets or for the colorful feathers of the male that are shed each year at the end of summer. Caring for peafowl requires proper nutrition as well as a good housing environment including a place for them to roost at night. One preferable way to build the roost is using a step ladder method that allows the birds to get up and down easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase six, 2-by-4-inch boards that are each 8 feet in length. The wider boards will be better for the peahens' feet and will also allow them to sit on their feet, which will keep them warm while they roost.

    • 2

Place two of the boards across the saw horses approximately 6 feet apart. These will be the sides of your step ladder roost. Using a tape measure, mark 2 feet from the bottom of each board with a carpenter's pencil.

Place a board across the two side boards at the 2-foot mark and nail it to both side boards. Measure off 2 more feet above the first cross board and mark both side boards again. Place another board across the side boards at the second 2-foot mark and nail it securely to both sides. Continue this process until you have attached all four boards to the side boards. You should now have a large, four-rung "step ladder."

Lean the roost against one of the walls inside your peahen coop. If your birds roam freely, you can lean the roost against the side of a barn, storage building or between two trees. The peahens may use the roost to climb into the tree branches and roost there for the night.
