How to Make a Rooster Leash

Keeping roosters domesticated or in a farm setting requires using some age-old methods for animal control. Roosters, whether for breeding or just keeping around the house, need leashes to keep them cooperative. Rooster leashes attach around the leg, unlike the neck, so that they can't seriously harm their windpipes or necks struggling against the leash. All of the components for a rooster leash should be easily found at your local hardware store, except for a nylon or neoprene hitch, which you will find at an animal supply store.

Things You'll Need

  • 1-foot metal stake
  • Nylon or neoprene hitch with brass grommets

Instructions

    • 1

Separate the large loop of the metal swivel by squeezing the piece of the loop that fits around the spinning portion. Fit the loop of the swivel around the loop of the metal stake and refit the loop onto the swivel.

    • 2

Slip the ends of the nylon cord through the small loop of the hitch and through the grommet on the hitch. Fit the metal rivet caps over the end by squeezing the cord through. Tie a knot on either end of the nylon cord to further keep the rivet caps from coming loose.

    • 3

Take the hitch and loosen the hole for the foot by pushing the doubled-over portion of the nylon strap through the washer.

    • 4

Insert your rooster's foot into the hitch. Any force the rooster applies to the hitch will tighten the grip, keeping your rooster in place.
