Things You'll Need
- Tank heater
- Solar pond aerator
- Fish
- Pool skimmer
Instructions
Install an automatic tank heater at the bottom of the poly tank. Choose a solar-powered heater if the tank is not located near an electrical outlet and select a heater designed specifically for poly tanks. Automatic heaters are designed to come on only when the temperature drops below freezing, keeping the water available even in the winter.
Place a solar pond aerator on top of the tank. The aerator helps to keep the water fresh and clean by agitating the surface. A good pond aerator can also reduce the risk of algae, which can quickly get out of control in a large poly stock tank.
Add an assortment of cold water fish to your stock tank. The fish eat the algae that would otherwise accumulate on the sides and at the top of the tank. The fish also eat insects and larvae that land in the water. Goldfish, carp and catfish are all good choices for a large stock tank.
Use a swimming pool skimmer to remove any leaves and debris that fall into the tank. Check for debris on the tank each time you top off the water. Keep the skimmer close to the tank to make cleaning easier.
Add water to the stock tank each day to replace losses due to evaporation. Adding water to the tank everyday also prevents the water from becoming stagnant.
