How to Use DE in Chicken Coop

Although diatomaceous earth (DE) is a white powder that looks like all-purpose flour, it is actually an efficient and natural parasite and pest deterrent. DE is made up of the fossilized remains of marine organisms such as algae. It feels soft to the human touch but is abrasive with sharp edges that kill parasites and insects. Food-grade DE safely rids chicken coops of pests as well as kills parasite on and in the chickens.

Instructions

    • 1

Sprinkle a thin layer of DE with the flour sifter on the bottom of a clean nesting box. Add about 2 inches of hay or shavings to the box, and sprinkle another layer of DE over the hay. Alternate layers until the nesting box is sufficiently full.

    • 2

Sprinkle a thin layer of DE on the clean floor of the hen house. Spread about 2 inches of hay or shavings over the DE. Sprinkle another layer of DE over the litter and top with 2 more inches of litter.

    • 3

Dust chickens lightly with DE to eliminate pests. DE can harm lungs if breathed in, so dust carefully to avoid creating a cloud of DE dust.

    • 4

Whitewash roosts with a mixture of 1 cup DE and 1/2 cup water. Stir often and apply with a paintbrush or clean rag.

    • 5

Add DE to the chickens' feed to eliminate internal parasites. The usual dosage is a 2- to 5-percent concentrate, but check the manufacturer's recommendations before adding.
