Extended coops can be purchased or ordered from local grain and farm stores. Check Internet sources for Southern State, Agway or Tractor Supply stores. Get recommendations from store personnel on what type of extended coop suits the area, your specific needs and price range.
Check local Craigslist listings for people selling or making coops in your area. Extended coops can also be found in poultry magazines such as "Backyard Poultry" or other poultry- and chicken-keeping specific websites. Hatcheries, such as Murray McMurray, often carry coops as well.
Search the web for extended coops. Several coop production sites exist online selling a wide variety of extended coops from decorative to practical. These sites also offer plans for people interested in building their own coop.
How to Get Extended Chicken Coops
Keeping chickens as pets and food production livestock has gained in popularity. Chickens are livestock and need certain amenities and care to thrive. Laying hens need constant supplies of clean water and food, and they do produce quite a bit of waste that needs to be removed every day. Roosters crow, and a coop needs to be large and well-built to prevent noise issues for the family or neighbors. Purchase a coop that best suits the weather and conditions of the poultry-keeping family. In areas where wet and cold are common purchase a large, barn style coop (at least 10 feet by 10 feet). Chickens will be inside for long periods, and plenty of space and headroom are needed to allow air circulation and ease of access. These large barn extended coops are necessary in very warm areas because chickens overheat quickly. The small, hutch style coops are satisfactory for temporary housing, in-barn housing or as pasture laying boxes in temperate areas. They are a bad choice for full-time housing because they do not allow for ease of access, room for the birds, proper air circulation and temperature control. Unlike rabbits, chickens are too boisterous and messy to be housed in small hutch areas. Extended coops can be purchased several different ways through local clubs, stores or online.
