How to Make a Freeze Resistant Water Tank for Cattle

Farm animals are kept warm in winter naturally by fur, but are also dependent on humans for protection. Pay extra attention to the health of your cattle, which are easily susceptible to diseases by living outdoors most of the time. Prepare your cattle for the winters by making them a freeze resistant water tank and ensuring that the water they drink does not freeze.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a heater for your water tank from your local farming store. Look for one that will automatically switch itself off when it is taken out of the water because animals may chew on or pull the heater out of the water and if it is still on, this can prove to be dangerous.

    • 2

Set your heater and tank close to an area where it has proper access to electricity and an electricity switch. The wire of the heater should not be excessively long so the animals will not bite into it or try to pull it out of its switch.

    • 3

Enclose the wire of the heater in a PVC made pipe. Secure it properly as this will help prevent animal harm to the wire.

Put a large ball in the space of the tank that is not frozen as quickly as other areas. Preferably, use a basketball or football and place it in a spot with no ice particles. This will enable the cattle to stir the balls about in the water as they drink from the tank, and the areas where the ball moves will be unable to form large blocks of ice.
