How to Make a Stock Tank Aerator

Aeration is the act of adding oxygen to water, and it is vital in crowded stock tanks. It can mean the difference between life or death for your fish when keeping large numbers of fish in these outdoor tanks. The principles of aerating such a stock tank are simple and easily applied. With a little effort, a stock tank can be cheaply and effectively aerated with off-the shelf, pond-keeping equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash all pumps, submersible components and the flagstone. They often contain dust.

    • 2

Affix the two pumps to the flagstone with aquarium glue or zip ties. If glued, allow 24 to 48 hours to cure and then rinse the area. Take care to affix them in such a way that their inlets are not blocked and their outlets point upward.

    • 3

Assemble your pond fountain kit. This will vary considerably depending on the model. Follow the manufacturer's instructions that come with the kit.

    • 4

Place the flagstone and pumps in the deepest part of the stock tank. This will help mix the water and prevent stratification.

    • 5

Using vinyl tubing, connect the fountain pump to the fountain kit.

    • 6

Plug in your pumps and check to see that they are working. The tank should now be adequately aerated.
