Instructions
Inspect the wheel hubs. Feel around the wheels to look for dry rot and damaged tread. Also check to see when the wheels were purchased. Horse trailer wheels should be replaced about every three years. Check for any nails or cracks in the tires and finally ensure they have enough air in them. Make sure the hubs are not rusted or loose.
Check that the horse ramp attachment is aligned and stable. Horse ramps can become weakened and their bearings loosened from continuous use. Make sure the horse ramp can be lowered properly, that there is no rusting around the hinges and that it is not sagging or weakened.
Ensure the floor is strong. The condition of the trailer floor is very important, particularly if you are buying a used trailer. Make sure the floor is strong and does not sink down in any area. Inspect the fiberglass coating for any signs of stress or cracks. Finally, check for rust damage. To find signs of structural damage and severe rusting you must look both inside and underneath the trailer.
Check the spring suspension hangers to ensure they are not loose or faulty. The suspension of the trailer is similar to that of a car and thus vitally important.
Test the brakes. If the trailer uses a two-brake or four-brake system make sure they are working properly. Check the brake drum as well as the brake lining for any signs of wear and tear.
Look at the coupler that attaches the trailer to the car. Make sure it can attach to your car easily and is not worn.
How to Inspect Horse Trailers
If you have decided to buy or use a horse trailer, there are some important things you need to inspect to ensure your horse will be comfortable and safe. Horse trailers come in various sizes and makes and it is best not to look simply for the cheapest option. Overall you need to find a trailer that your horse will be comfortable and safe in, that is easy to move and attach to your car and that does not show any signs of structural damage or severe rusting.
