How to Bag Wet Distillers Grain

Wet distillers grain (WDG) is a byproduct of the process of distilling grain for either alcohol used for fuel or consumption. The grain is often used as a feed for livestock, although it spoils rapidly. Unless the WDG is bagged, or stored in another air tight manner, it can spoil in as little as a week. The bag used for storing WDG is a silage bag. These bags are long air-proof bags that use tractor-mounted farm implements to load.

Instructions

Monitor the storage of the WDG before it arrives at the farm, according to North Dakota State University. The grain should be stored in a clean area with no infestations of rodents or bird access. The area where fresh WDG is stored before shipment to the farm also should be free of older moldy grain. If possible, avoid exposing the WDG to rain or snow during transportation. Either will increase the moisture content of what is already a wet product.

Load the WDG into the silage bagger machine with a front-end loader. The silage bagger is a farm machine either powered by its own engine or mounted to a farm tractor by the power takeoff assembly. The bagger forces the WDG into the silage bag while removing the air from the bag. When all the WDG is stored in the bag, it is sealed to prevent spoiling. Limit bag size to the amount of WDG that will be used in about a week.

Monitor the bag until use. Rips or tears in the bag allow air into the bag increasing the rate of spoilage.
