How to Tie a Halter Out of Rope for Sheep

Rope halters are a commonly found in the tack rooms of many sheep owners. A halter fits over the muzzle and head of the sheep and allows you to control the sheep and move it from place to place without it escaping. Rope halters are lightweight, affordable and fit a variety of sheep, eliminating the need for each seep to have a separate halter.

Instructions

Melt the ends of your rope over an open flame such as a candle. This prevents the ends from unraveling. Tie a knot in one end of your rope, as close to the end as possible.

    • 2

Form a loop 5 inches long by folding the last 10 inches of the rope back on itself. Tie a knot in the loop by wrapping the rope over your finger, passing the folded end of the loop through the circle formed around your finger and pulling tightly to secure the knot.

    • 3

Make another loop in your rope 10 inches up the rope from the first, forming another knot as you did in the previous step. This will leave you with two loops that will fit on either side of the sheep's chin and will help keep the halter from slipping off his head.

Place the halter on your sheep with the loops coming together under the chin. Pass the free end of the rope over the sheep's ears and through the loops under the chin to form a complete halter. The rope will tighten slightly as you walk the sheep, holding it firmly on the head and giving you control. Pull the end of the rope out of the loops and lift off of the sheep's muzzle when you are ready to turn it loose.
