How to Build a Pet Duck House

Ducks are not the most common pets, but if you have space to provide them a home, they make great companions. Building a house is ideal in these cases, because ducks are not strong and can't defend themselves quite well. They need comfort and safety first. Once you provide your pet duck the shelter it needs, you can be assured that these feathery friends can be just as good animal company as any dog or cat.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for a nice place in your backyard for the duck house, big enough for the quantity of ducks you want to have. Preferably, look for a place with shade that is far away from shrubs or freshly sown areas.

    • 2

Place the floor and base of the house. It's most recommended to use a wooden floor, because grass can provide wetness, and this brings fungus. Cut two square wooden boards of the same size. Make sure the dimensions are large enough for your duck to have enough space. Fix one of these boards by nailing it into the grass. The ideal measurement should be approximately 4 feet wide, 4 feet long and 1 inch thick. The other one will be used later as the roof.

    • 3

Cut three other boards to be used as the back and the sides of the house. Make sure the length is not the same size as the floor. Preferably, make it 2 inches shorter. The height, however, is enough for your duck´s comfort, so 4 feet is good. Nail these boards to the floor first and then join them together using hammer and nails.

Cut another board of wood with the same height of the other three, but half the length, approximately 2 feet long. This would be the front side, with the space between boards is for the duck to enter and for you to clean the house and see your pet.

Place the roof of the house. Nail the roof to the top edges of the sides of the house.
