How to Make an Automatic Chicken Waterer

Automatic waterers for chickens are convenient, but they can be very expensive. Fortunately, for a fraction of the cost, you can make an automatic chicken waterer at home. You can turn a simple five-gallon bucket into an automatic chicken waterer with just a few minor adjustments. Instructions

    • 1

With your drill bit, drill a one-inch hole near the top of the five-gallon bucket. Make the hole 3 inches below the rim.

    • 2

Drill a series of holes 2 inches from the bottom of the bucket. Make six to eight holes a minimum of 3 inches apart.

    • 3

Push the automatic water control valve through the hole in the top of the bucket. Be sure to leave the end of the valve that attaches to the hose on the outside of the bucket. Seal around the valve with silicone sealant on both the inside and outside of the bucket. Let the silicone set for 24 hours.

Set your water pan in the chicken pen on a flat level surface. Place the bucket in the pan with the water valve at the top.

Hook up the garden hose to the automatic water valve. Place the lid on the bucket and turn on the water. The bucket will fill up just past the valve, and the water will shut off. When the water level gets below the valve, the water will come back on and refill the bucket.
