How to Load a Hay Trailer

Loading hay onto a trailer and having it not topple over is a learned skill. With practice this task can become effortless and quickly done. Square bales of hay tend to take more practice to load because they are loaded by hand whereas round bales are typically loaded by machine by the hay producer.

Instructions

    • 1

Carry one square bale of hay to the back, left corner of the trailer and place it as close to the corner as possible. Wear gloves.

    • 2

Lay another square hay bale directly to the right of the original bale. Continue laying hay from left to right across the trailer until one row of hay is on the trailer.

    • 3

Starting back in the left corner, start another row of hay on top of the original row. Stack the hay from left to right across the trailer until a second row of hay is on the trailer. Repeat this step until you have five rows of hay along the back side of the trailer.

    • 4

Starting on the trailer bed, lay a second bottom row in front of the original stacks of hay. Lay the hay all the way across the trailer.

    • 5

Step on top of the second row of hay and place another bale of hay across the top of the original stacks of hay. After you have stacked the hay six high, use rope across the top of the hay to keep it from falling.

    • 6

Continue in the same pattern until either the trailer is stacked with hay six high all the way from the front of the trailer to the back or you run out of hay.

    • 7

Tie down the hay with rope.
