How to Tie a Cow Halter

Cows are an integral part of a farm. From the traditional to the more commercial farming methods, cows provide the backbone for many agrarian areas. From providing milk, meat and the precursor for many other dairy products, cows need to be in plentiful supply. However, these animals must be easy to move and control, since their intimidating bulk and weight may pose a danger to people. This is remedied through halter training, where the cows are led about from an early age so that they are more used to being handled in the future.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a length of rope measuring 12 inches long. If you are making a halter for an older animal, you may extend this length up to 15 inches.

    • 2

Seal each end of this rope by dipping it in the paint. Allow it to dry overnight.

    • 3

Measure 1 foot from one end of the rope. Place your hand at the end of the measured length, and twist the other end until the foot-measured part of the rope unravels, opening the coils.

    • 4

Take the shorter part of the rope (the part that you did not measure and unravel) and thread it through one of the open strands you created in part 2 to make a large noose.

    • 5

Twist open the part you have threaded through so that it resembles the foot-long length of rope you created earlier. Thread the longer rope through these newly created openings to create a knot.

    • 6

Twist about 2 inches of one of the sealed ends to unravel it into three separate threads that create the coil of rope. Push the long end (the foot long one) through these three threads to complete the halter.

    • 7

Fit the halter on your cow. If it is too tight, you may need to adjust the halter by loosening some of the knots. It is ok if it fits slightly loose, since it will still have the desired effect.
