An electric fence can provide many uses, from containing livestock and keeping unwanted intruders out of your garden to making sure Fido doesn't dig out under your fence. A solar powered electric fence provides convenience and has no electricity cost.

Figure out where you want to place the fence charger. The charger is the unit that contains the solar panel and will power the fence. The charger needs to be in a place where it will receive the maximum sunlight possible throughout the day. It also needs to be in a place from which it will be easy to run the fence, so you can cover the perimeter of the area you want to fence off. Take some measurements and pictures of the area to take with you when you shop.

Measure how far you need to run your electric fence. You want to make sure that you get a charger that is powerful enough to sustain power at the end of the fence opposite to the charger.

Decide how powerful a solar fence you need. Electric fences range from a light shock to a powerful jolt and will affect different animals different ways. When buying a solar fence for livestock, a more powerful fence is needed because of their thick hide. If you are trying to keep your dog from digging out, you don't need as powerful a fence.

Buy a fence that will fit in your desired spot. Some solar fence chargers can be quite heavy so be sure to consider that if you plan to support it with a shelf. Look for fence chargers that are mountable for added convenience.

Purchase your fencing. You can find electric fence wire at most agricultural stores. Your fence charger will likely come with a length of fence, but you may need more, so be sure you have a measurement of the length of fence needed.
