How to Make a Flock of Chickens

Heritage breeds, such as Belgian D'Uccles, Javas, Aseels, Delawares and endangered Mediterranean breeds hold beneficial genetic and aesthetic importance. People create chicken flocks, whether heritage breeds or more contemporary breeds, for a variety of reasons including egg production, breed interest and to enjoy the beauty of the birds. Chickens make friendly and clean pets and a flock enhances the aesthetic appeal of a yard.

Consider the region in which you live and chose chickens tolerant of the temperatures in the area. Choose cold weather breeds for the flock, such as cochins, barred rocks and Rhode Island Reds and hot weather breeds from the Mediterranean class (Ancona, leghorns) for hot weather areas. Consider range availability and pick breeds from the bantam class for small holdings and agile, flighted breeds (welsummers or leghorns), for more rural areas.

Visit poultry shows to view the different chicken breeds. See which breeds appeal to you for personality, feather type and color, origin, demeanor, gait and husbandry needs. Ask breeders and fanciers about their chickens. Join local or national poultry clubs to learn about breeds, care, showing and other aspects of keeping chickens.

Consult rare breeds organizations to see which endangered chicken breeds are in need of restoration. Instruction on rare or endangered breeds is obtained from such organizations. Choose birds in these classes from breeders or hatcheries. Engage in preservation breeding programs and use the flock to spread the word about heritage chickens and the need to save antique farm animals. Note that rare chicken flocks are a spectacular addition to the farm or yard.
