Name the goat using a favorite baby name. Give the goat a middle name to make her even more like a part of the family. Consult baby naming books or online lists for ideas. Websites such as PetNames.net and PetPlace.com provide numerous ideas for naming a goat, as do online pet forums.
Look for defining physical characteristics. If the goat has black hooves, call him "Black Foot." Name a goat with a distinctive eye markings "Bullseye" or "Bandit," just to name a few. Personality traits also are used to come up with a special name. If the goat is active and enjoys playing, his name could be "Rascal," "Flip" or "Bizzy." A more subdued animal might deserve the name "Serenity" or "Lily."
Use a foreign language to name the goat. The word "goat" in German, for instance, is "Ziege." If the goat has a reddish coat, name her "Rouge," the French word for "red." Don't limit names to those words that describe the goat. Not many people are likely to know that the name "Franela" means "flannel" in Spanish or "Mela" is the Italian word for "apple." Simply pick a word that is easy to pronounce and seems to fit the goat.
Name the goat after a favorite character in a book or movie. Name the goat anything from "Atticus Finch" to "Holly Golightly." Taking names from authors, musicians and actors is a popular way to name a pet. An owner who enjoys reading Mark Twain might end up with a goat named "Huckleberry," "Sam" or "Sawyer."
Pedigreed animals come with names, but that doesn't mean they are not able to be changed. Combine the goat's parents' names to form new name, or create a new identity altogether using the same letters. The sky is the limit when it comes to creativity. Repeat the name several times to make sure everyone in the family likes the sound. Ask friends and family members their opinion of the name.
How to Name a Goat
People have domesticated goats for thousands of years. They continue to provide milk, meat and clothing all around the world, but many people raise goats simply as pets. They are generally gentle and social animals, making them suitable for families with children. Naming a goat is just as simple as naming a dog, cat or other animal and confirms the animal's status as a loved and cherished pet. Goats are also intelligent creatures and actually learn to come to anyone who calls their name.
