How to Remove Mats From an Angora Goat

Angora goats are goats that grow a long coat over time. They're usually raised and sheared for the fleece --- or mohair --- which can be spun into a variety of different items. However, if you let the hair on your goat get too long, it can get matted the same way that it will on any other animal with long fur. Fortunately you can remove the mats. You should definitely clear the fleece of mats before shearing the goat, particularly if you plan to sell it as commercial mohair.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the goat. Use a shampoo meant for de-matting to help lubricate and loosen the mats.

    • 2

Dry the goat with a blow drier. Examine the mats to determine the severity. Pull apart light mats with your fingers and pet the hair back into place. Use a brush or pick to loosen dense matting.

    • 3

Brush the mats out of the goat's fleece. Grip the hair near the roots and brush out the mat beginning at the opposite end of the hair and working down toward the root. Make sure that you don't pull on the fleece at the root as this will hurt the goat and make it less likely to stand still while you comb it.
